 Pelvic Health FAQs

  • Pelvic health is evolving for the better! Occupational therapists (OTs) can get specialty training to provide the same traditional manual techniques and anatomy considerations as physical therapists, but also prioritize other factors.  As your pelvic health OT, I will analyze the way you do your everyday parenting, work, or household tasks to make changes that will impact your pelvic function, back pain, etc. I don’t prescribe hours of exercises or leave you to figure it out yourself. Who has the time or bandwidth for that? Evidence suggests that special attention needs to be paid to the affect the nervous system has on the pelvic floor. Ever experience upper back or neck pain after a stressful work week? Our pelvic floor can hold tension in that same way! You want a provider who is approaching your pelvic care by looking at the whole mind and body.

  • You may have to just take my word on this one… but yes. Women’s pelvic therapy should be a standard of care during pregnancy and after birth and it unfortunately is not. If you’ve had a poor experience with pelvic floor therapy in the past, you are not alone. Give it another try.

If you aren’t experiencing any symptoms now but want to prevent them in the future, you’re in the right place! You would benefit from an evaluation and to learn about how to optimize core and pelvic floor function, especially in pregnancy and postpartum.

  • Absolutely not. Unlike past experiences you may have had with other practitioners, with me, you are always in charge.  I maintain a trauma certification to further give you this peace of mind. Internal assessment and manual work is just one piece to the puzzle.  Actually, a lot of my favorite and most beneficial work is done fully clothed! I will always provide you with unassuming choices for your care and we can see huge changes in your symptoms and confidence without any internal work.

  • That depends on a lot of factors.  My approach is highly educational. For results that last long-term, you need to learn to understand, trust, and listen to your body.  I then provide you the tools to respond to those messages your body is sending. This is a transformational process that may take some time and relearning. That being said, I’m confident you will see initial improvement within 1-3 sessions. Most people have the tools they need to manage their pelvic wellness journey within 5-8 sessions. Clients are usually seen once every 1-3 weeks, as you need time between sessions to trial the changes we’ve discussed but may benefit from consistency in manual therapies.
